Sado Tea Ceremony

Mrs. Murofushi, Yauka Katsumori, and Mayumi Okaki will honor and perform the sixteenth century style form of drinking powdered green tea. Sen-no Rikyu established the foundation of Sado as it is Known today. After the death of Rikyu, his descendants established three Sen houses which have passed on his Way of Tea. What will be shared is the Sado of the Ura- Senke family tradition of tea. The present Grand Tea Master of Ura-Senke is the fifteenth generation blood descendant of Sen-no Rikyu.

The participants of the workshop will receive the honor of having tea served to them. The basic principles of Sado are expressed in the words harmony, respect, purity, and tranquillity. First, harmony can be created between persons, between objects, between a person and an object, among all matters of the World. Second, in Sado, we should respect everyone and everything without distinction of status or rank. Third, spiritual purity is essential in Sado. Finally, we can embody tranquillity only when we make harmony, respect, and purity our own. By learning Sado, one seeks to obtain an ultimate peace of mind. The Grand Tea Master teaches us the thought of "Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea."

One last thought; When John Martin asked, "What does one think about during a Tea Ceremony?" Mrs. Murofushi said that, "she thanks the Tea and has a thankfulness for everything". In that notion, The Berea Craftpersons' Association again thanks the Kentucky Arts Council and Orb-bit INTERNET Access Provider for providing $3600.00 for this event. Thank you!
